Abstract

Pakistan has variety of topographic features including planes, sub-mountainous and
mountainous ranges. These mountainous and sub-mountainous ranges possess a vast potential for
concrete aggregates. However, alkali silica reactivity has largely been observed in the past, due to
reactive nature of these aggregates. This study was planned to explore the possible causes of alkali
silica reaction (ASR) and their consequences in the environment of Pakistan. Several materials can be
used economically to mitigate alkali silica expansion. Among all possible remedies, use of granulated
blast furnace slag is the most effective and economical option to control ASR. Use of other materials
such as calcined or bentonite clay, rice husk ash, bagasse ash and silica fume may be effective against
ASR.
